Alternate Gateways » Site

Preamble

This design is one of many to grace Alternate Gateways in the last year. As you can see: I like designing things...and I like change. I've had a Gothic look, a stationery look, a heavily graphic look, a fresh summer look, and a few more (as seen below). This time I decided to go back to my creative roots. Working on programming for a while had substantially hampered by creativity, so I sat down and made a wish list of things I wanted on the site and the sort of feel I was after. That's how I came upon the 'floral' design. It is heavily graphic, but without the slow loading times, and I think it has a rather mellow vibe to it.

Construction

Design

I have been drawing patterns for a while so wanted to work them into my site. That's how I came upon the floral look at the top of the page. It took over ten hours to complete, as I drew each shape in Photoshop and ensured that there was a lot of variety. I do think it was worth it though. I have achieved the look that I set out to achieve.

Colours

I choose green and blue because they are rather fresh colours, conjuring up images of grass, foliage and the sky, which I feel compliment the black floral designs.

Flash

As far as Flash is concerned, I am in two minds. If used subtly and correctly, Flash can truly enhance a website, but misuse it, and it will tarnish your reputation as a professional web designer! At one time, I used to build full Flash websites (providing there was HTML back-content, or an HTML version of the site); then I did away with Flash altogether. Now I use it in small doses - all the better to handle! Take my portfolio page: it contains a Flash portfolio but also an HTML one (which, I have to admit does rely on JavaScript, but the amount of people who turn JavaScript off are in the minority). So you can use Flash, as long as you don't OD on it.
